Third Grade

by Mrs. Dubs and Mrs. Ockander

November 20, 2007

We have been feeling very lucky in the last month.  With the weather so warm, we weren’t quite sure how to react to a white morning the week before Thanksgiving.  Guess it is time to get out the hats, mittens, and most importantly, boots!  Please be sure the get the kids bundled up for recess, as it is doesn’t usually warm up much between the start of school and morning recess.

We have started the exciting process of multiplication in Math class.  It started with building arrays, sorting tokens, and creating equal groups.  We have since started working the problems in the reverse, so we can see how division works.  While some of you may be a little frustrated with our “method madness,” just trust us that this really will  work out!

Science in Mrs. Ockander’s class had us looking at the solar system.  We have recorded facts, and looked at several clips of each planet.  We have learned that several planets will never complete one full orbit around the sun in our lifetime!  We’ve also been discussing why Pluto is no longer considered a planet, but a dwarf planet.  Just ask a third grader – they are very impressive in explaining it!

Students in 3-D are completing a study of ways Earth’s surface can change.  Nearly all of these involves the force of wind and/or rain.  Students have enjoyed learning about floods, tornadoes, earthquakes, volcanoes, and hurricanes.  A working model volcano was assembled in class for all students to observe.

The current Social Studies topic is our National Holidays. We have been discussing the importance of each, and had the opportunity to listen to Mrs. Mattingly explain what it means to be a Veteran.
