Second Grade News

April 18, 2008
April has been a super busy month for the second graders. We are working hard perfecting our skills in all the curriculum areas. Let us share a few of our favorite highlights that have taken place this month.
In the reading area we are practicing how to use a Venn diagram. We use this when comparing and contrasting folktales. Our reading groups continue to practice new vocabulary and keep passing our mastery lists. Both groups are getting close to finishing their reading books and that excites them very much. During author time we are reading books by the author Eve Bunting. Reading is one of the favorite parts of our day.
Money has been the word of the day in the math area. We have practiced counting money, used decimal notation, and that ever important skill of making change. Another money skill that will come up this month is practicing adding and subtracting money amounts with and without a calculator. The more we practice these skills the more comfortable we become using this in everyday life. We’re also revisiting our math facts before we end the year. Mrs. Papa sure hopes we continue this over the summer break.
Taxes and earning an income were our topics for Social Studies this month. We found out how important they are in helping our communities be the best they can be. Science finds us talking about Matter and the three states of matter (solid, liquid, and gas). It is fun to learn about how we can change the state of matter through some experiments.
The first and second grades have started to work on our annual spring play. It is called The Little Red Hen and will be presented on May 6, 2008. We sure have worked hard to learn our lines and hope everyone can come to our performance. Another special activity that we have been asked to do is revisit the nursing home in David City to sing and read to them. We did this at Christmas time and they have requested an encore.
As you can tell the month has really moved right along and we continue to work our hardest each day. A great big thank you to all the parents who have helped us on our second grade journey this year. We couldn’t have done it without all of your support. The end of the year is very near and we continue daily to prepare for the third grade!
