Second Grade
by Mrs. Behrns and Mrs. Byrkit
April 24, 2008
We are very busy as the end of the year approaches working on completing all of our second grade work. Lots of time has been focused in studying the characteristics of folk tales. We read many and found items that were the same and different in both versions of the same folk tale. Everyone learned how to use a Venn Diagram to show comparisons and contrasts between the two versions. It was fun reading several versions of Little Red Riding Hood and The Three Little Pigs. Mrs. Behrns' class made muffins following the recipe found at the end of one version of Little Red Riding Hood. They were delicious! Now we are busy working on our final writing assessment which is a narrative selection.
Our topic for April in Social Studies was taxes and income. The students read stories and discussed the meanings of these words and ways that tax dollars are spent. It was a very appropriate topic to study in April since most parents were talking about it at home as well.
Mrs. Byrkit's class studied male and female scientists and their contributions to society. They read many biographies of their lives and took notes about each one to prepare for the assessment. In Mrs. Behrns' class recycling was the topic. Everyone brought things to be taken to the recycling center. We shared ideas concerning ways that even kids can reduce, reuse and recycle.
Many new strategies were learned in April in math class. Counting money and making change are a difficult task that we all work very hard on. This is a very important life skill! Much time was also spent on two and three digit addition and subtraction with regrouping. Dollar and decimal notation of two and three digit problems were also practiced.
We all look forward to the fast approaching summer vacation and will work hard to complete all of our tasks to become third graders.
