Sixth Grade
by Mrs. Andel and Mrs. Schatz
April 24, 2008
The end of the school year is fast approaching. Sixth grade students are anxious to complete their elementary years and move on to middle school.
As we near the end, the sixth grade math students are pulling together several math skills. The unit on rates, ratios, and proportions is a great unit on nutrition as well. Students are looking at the calories from fat, carbohydrates, and protein a food item has, and they are comparing the foods they are eating to their own level of activity. This unit also leads well in to the measuring perimeter, area, and volume activities that they will be a part of to prepare for their final math assessment. Watch out! They may be telling you what you should eat, and they might try measuring you!
Space is the final unit in science. Students have completed the life cycle of a star, constellations and moon phases. We now finish the year studying the planets. Solar System Rescue is an interactive laser disc program students will use to study the planets. Note taking, group discussion and research are key components of Solar System Rescue. This program allows the class to ¨travel¨ to the planets and rescue lost probes.
April was a busy
month in social studies. Students had to complete several
assessments that involved research on the internet. One
assessment was an oral presentation. Students put together a
PowerPoint presentation detailing information they researched about
a famous person who made it on the cover of Time
Magazine. On another assessment, sixth graders had to
cite the sources used when locating information from magazines,
newspapers and the internet. Click on the link to see

Technology
All reading groups are about to complete their last chapter book in ECRI. Two groups are reading nonfiction. The books from this genre are The Natural World of the Rainforest, and Lewis and Clark. The other two groups are reading fantasy. One group is reading Devil´s Arithmetic and the other is discussing Tuck Everalsting. Josh Y. has been keeping track of the total number of vocabulary words in his group. That total is 756 at the end of April! Vocabulary is a big part of ECRI and reading.
Nebraska´s attorney
general, Jon Bruning, sponsored an internet safety contest this
year. Sixth graders in Mrs. Schatz´s class participated as a
part of the technology class she took sponsored by ESU 7. Sue
Oppliger, technology coordinator at ESU 7, helped write a grant
that provided technology equipment for our school. Josh
Y. and Brody S. received first in the poster division. Rachel
F., Sabrina P., and Evie I. received honorable mention in video
prouction. Sue also provided a pizza party for all participants.

Mrs. Andel and Mrs. Schatz would like to extend our best wishes to the sixth graders as they enter middle school. Good luck!
