Second Grade
by Mrs. Behrns and Mrs. Byrkit
October 20, 2008
During reading class the students
are in full swing learning new words, reading their stories, and
taking Mastery Tests. The Mastery Tests have several words which
are taken from the stories in their reading books. The students
have to read the words in a given time and spell all the words
correctly in order to pass each test and go on to the next list.
Math class has been focusing on telling
time, counting money, basic addition and subtraction facts, fact
families, number stories and place value. The students enjoy all
the math games that go with many of the lessons. Most of the
students are doing a great job of getting their Home Links returned
promptly. (Thank you parents for your help.)
Our Social Studies Units this month were
Rules, Laws and Citizenship. The children discussed classroom and
home rules they should follow and laws all citizens should follow.
They also identified what good citizens do and don't do. We will be
showing our good citizenship by sharing Halloween poems and songs
for the residents at david place on Halloween day.
The students in Mrs. Behrns' science class
studied plants. The students identified the parts of plants and
seeds and they learned the functions of the leaves, stems, and
roots. They also collected and compared a variety of seeds. Mrs.
Byrkit's students learned to identify the major body organs and
their functions. They made brain hats and body vests with the major
organs on them so the students could better visualize the
placement, size and shape of each organ.
