DC Tops Scotus to Move to Second Round of Playoffs

The 2008 State Football Playoffs kicked off last Thursday night, and for the second straight year, the David City Scouts were invited to the party. This year, the Scouts were sent to Columbus to play Scotus Central Catholic, a team who had defeated the Scouts handily earlier in the year.
For the first three minutes of the game, it looked like DC was going to suffer another one-sided loss to the Shamrocks. Scotus scored two quick touchdowns to go up 14-0, and on the ensuing possession, the Scouts lost an interception, already its second turnover of the game. However, DC was able to force a punt on that possession, and from that point on, it was a great high school football game.
DC got on the board in the first quarter, when senior Broderick S. rushed in from 4 yards away. He also kicked the extra point to pull the Scouts to within 14-7. Broderick wasn't done. He also kicked a 25-yard field goal just before halftime to draw the Scout even closer, 14-10.
The third quarter was a defensive struggle, much like the second. Neither team scored in the third, so going into the fourth quarter, DC was still down 14-10. Things would get worse to start the fourth when the Shamrocks scored for the first time since the first three minutes of the game. Scotus' touchdown pushed their lead to 21-10, and they threatened to push their lead even further when they lined up for a field goal on their next possession. The field goal came up short, though, and the Scouts still had an open door, down by eleven points with less than seven minutes to play.
DC got a break on a fourth and one on their next possession. Quarterback Travis W. faked a pitch to the right, rolled out, and found a wide open Aaron S. who sprinted 71 yards for a touchdown to pull the Scouts to within 21-16. Obviously the Scouts went for two in order to make it a three-point game, but the attempt failed, and the Scouts were still down five. The Scouts got the ball back with under three minutes left and two timeouts. Travis rallied the team, and drove them down the field. With just over 30 seconds to play, Travis found sophomore Seth B. in the seam for a 19-yard go-ahead touchdown. After the successful two-point conversion, the Scouts led 24-21. The Scout defense held, and the Scouts advanced to the second round.
DC's next game will be at home vs. Wahoo Neumann, the team who ended David City's season last year. The game is scheduled for 7:00 pm, and will be broadcast on KLIR (101.1).
