How many different algorithms does it take for a fourth grader to multiply two- and three-digit numbers? The answer is...3! Back in the "olden days" when we learned how to multiply larger numbers, we learned just one way. Your child learned this method, too. We called it the "traditional method" of multiplication. However, your child also learned how to multiply using the partial products algorithm and the lattice method. Each of these ways allowed your child to multiply correctly (as long as they knew their basic facts), but gave them a choice so that they may eventually pick the method that works best for them. We are now focusing on understanding the division operation, developing a method for dividing whole numbers, and solving division number stories. Please continue to have your child practice their basic multiplication/division facts at home.
The fourth graders are nearing the end of our 15 hours of keyboarding. Students have practiced keyboarding techniques especially working hard to keep our eyes on the copy and use the correct fingers. We encourage your child to continue to practice keyboarding skills at home. A fun keyboarding activity is called Dance Mat Typing. It is located at http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/typing/flash/stage1.shtml.
In science we studied scientists that have impacted our world. We worked in small groups to research and then report about scientists who have been recognized as having a great deal of expertise in their field. The scientists were from the past and present, represented both genders, and came from a variety of cultures. The children learned that a scientist isn't just someone who works in a laboratory wearing a white coat. Scientists are explorers!
In social studies we are working on the regions of the United States. The fourth graders have explored the northeast and southeast regions. Some topics have included major landforms and bodies of water, culture, industries, weather, and the location of each state. Our next region that we will be cruising to will be the midwest!
