Fourth Grade News

by Elizabeth Grosc

November 19, 2008

Can you believe it, 2008 is almost over and we will soon be welcoming the New Year.  The fourth graders are making great strides, learning a lot of new concepts and I am very proud of them.

Our writing is becoming more exciting as we learn new writing skills.  The fourth grade has been busy writing 5 paragraph narratives.  During the past month, they have written stories about something unusual that has happened to them, a special place, a special person, and a time when they were kind and helped someone.  They are learning to add voice to their writing and have shown much improvement.

In science, the fourth graders have been researching and investigating different scientist and their contributions to our world.  Some of the scientists are Louise Braille, Marie Curie, Thomas Edison, Albert Einstein, Henry Ford, Elijah McCoy, Sequoyah, Garret Morgan, and many more.  After completing their research, the student put their keyboarding and computer knowledge to use by using Microsoft Publisher to prepare a brochure featuring their scientist.  The brochure was then used to share information about their scientist with their classmates.

During math class, we have been busy discovering different method of multiplying multidigit numbers.  The lattice method seems to be the favorite.  We also have learned different method of dividing.  Making and measuring angles is also a new skill we have acquired.

Regions and states are the topic of the season for fourth grade in social studies.  During our study of the regions, the students were divided into groups and assigned a region to research.  After completing the research, the groups each prepared a poster with information about their region to share with their classmates.  Starting in January, we will begin an in-depth study of Nebraska history.  This is always a fun unit to study.

Have a Happy Holiday Season and enjoy your break from school.  See you in 2009.
