Why is the ability to read well so important? It has been proven, through many studies, that those students who are better readers have greater academic success in all areas! As a parent we can contribute greatly to our child's success in school through literacy at home. Even before a child is born reading to them and playing classical music helps in their cognitive development. It continues to be extremely important to read to your child as a baby, toddler, pre-kindergartner, kindergartner and continuing on through their schooling. When children are young they love to be read to. Not only does this act as quality bonding time for parent and child, but it helps teach them how to sit, teaches them pre-reading skills and sets them up to be successful readers. It has also been proven through a variety of research studies that those students who read daily and enjoy reading have a greater academic success. Block out at least 30 minutes everyday where reading is involved. You might even read the paper, but spend some time reading to your child and having them read to you, and have a discussion about what you are reading. Turn the television off and read, it will help your child in the long run.

I have been very pleased with the results of the REWARDS PROGRAM, that the 3rd through 6th grade struggling readers participated in. I have seen growth from nearly every student that has participated, and like most thing those students who really paid attention and worked got more out of it and showed bigger growth. The first graders are showing progress in their reading as well. They are using the Sound Partners program and the one group works with writing sentences. After every unit the students have a free reading day where they can pick any of the books in my library to read and seem to really enjoy that time. The Kindergartner's are continuing to grow in there skills as well. I have several groups that are combining skills in letter recognition and phonemic awareness to work on reading and they are doing very well.
