Fourth Grade News

by Elizabeth Grosc

August 28, 2010

My name is Elizabeth Grosc and I am your child’s 4th grade teacher. I am delighted to have your child in my class this year.  I am looking forward to a very successful year, and I know you are too.  I have high expectations for your child and I will be doing all that I can to help your child achieve those expectations.  You can help.  I will be expecting all work assigned in class to be completed.  Of course, not all children work at the same pace.  Some children will get their work done in class and some will not.  Whether or not a child gets his or her work done in class has no effect on their grade.  If your child does not complete an assignment in class, he or she will be required to complete it at home.  The way you can help is to ask your child every day if they have schoolwork that needs to be done or check their assignment book and, if so, make sure your child completes the assignment. Your help and support will not only make your child more successful in school this year, but will also instill good study habits that will last a lifetime.

We are very excited in fourth grade because we have a new reading book.  The new reading series incorporates many of the components that students need to be successful in school. I will be teaching to the whole group and also have three small groups. The students will be placed in a small group according to their needs and ability level.   During small group instruction, I will be reteaching and emphasizing the skills that I have taught earlier to the whole group. Some of the components that are taught are phonics and spelling, vocabulary and word origin, reading strategies, fluency, writing, and grammar.

This year our school building has adopted a common code of conduct that outlines the expectations for all students.  We have designed a system that clearly shows students how to behave in all areas of the school.  Our staff is trying to encourage positive behavior and discourage negative behavior. The staff will recognize students “caught following the 3 “Be’ Rules (Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible,) by giving a reward ticket.  Please sign these when your student brings them home so that your child can be entered into the monthly drawing for prizes.  It is our hope that by having concrete rules, reinforcement, and consequences, students will understand the expectation at Bellwood Attendance Center.

Finally, I want you to know that one of my most important goals this year is to keep the lines of communication open with you.  Please do not hesitate to call me at school. My hope for this coming year is that we will all learn and grow together and along the way have some fun.  See you soon
