Fourth Grade News

The month of February has been cold and snowy and the students have had great fun building things in the snow. Thanks for making sure that your child has been appropriately dressed for the weather.
We have finally finished fractions. We have learned how to add and subtract fractions, how to write fractions as decimals and how to find equivalent fractions. Our current unit has us measuring and finding the area and the perimeter of geometric figures. The next unit is all about how to multiply, divide and convert fractions to percents.
During February, the fourth graders have learned about the way heat moves, CCR or conduction, convection and radiation. Then we began our study of earthquakes and volcanoes. We will watch videos, read books on volcanoes and earthquakes, and complete some internet activities.
In early February, the fourth grade students completed the State Writing Assessment. The students did a wonderful job of writing and were relieved when the two days of testing were over. Recently, the students have had fun with idioms, alliterations, and onomatopoeia.
Social Studies time finds us learning about the early explorers from France and Spain that came to the Louisiana Territory such as Colonel Atkinson and Stephen Long. Our next unit will include a study of the Oregon Trail through Nebraska. This unit seems to be the student’s favorite. On February 26, the fourth graders will be going to Central Community College in Columbus to celebrate Nebraska’s birthday with other fourth graders from area school. It should be a fun time.
