Remember when your parents and grandparents told you that the older you get, the faster the years go by? I thought they were all crazy because, at that time, the years could not go by fast enough for me. So, here we are. This is the last scoop article of another school year. Has there really been another year gone by??
As I do every year, I will encourage students not to take the summer off from learning. Sitting in a classroom is not the only way to learn. There are many fun activities students can do throughout the summer. Consider a trip to one of Nebraska’s State Parks. You can find information about different parks at http://www.ngpc.state.ne.us/. There are also many museums in the state of Nebraska. More information about them can be found at http://www.nebraskamuseums.org/.
On the school website there are activities that can be done at home, along with educational (and FUN!!) websites. I will send home a paper copy for students who do not have internet access as there are many activities that do not require a computer or internet. For those of you with internet, here are instructions to get to the page.
• Go to www.davidcitypublicschools.org
• Click Student Resources on left side of page
• Click Student Resources by Ed Sieck
• Find Grade Level Curriculum Links under General Links and click on it
• Last click on Summer Activities
A key to planning academic activities in the summer is considering what your child likes to do. For example, if they enjoy fishing, take them fishing and incorporate academics into your fun. Research places in your area to fish. Look up information about the fish you caught. Find out the best bait for fish you want to catch. Measure and weigh the fish you catch. These are all ways to learn and kids won’t even know it!!
Getting involved in your child’s learning is a great way to help him/her be successful. You can set aside some time each day or each week to keep those brains active. Just remember in the summer to make it fun!
