PE Students Bowling at Bellwood

by Connie Lentz

March 10, 2010

Bowling is a sport that appeals to everyone: young or old, weak or strong, children or adults.
The modern game of tenpins had its origin in northern Italy.  The Italians called their game 'bowls".  Rounded stones without finger holes and held in open hand were used as balls.  In 1623 Dutch settlers introduced the game to America as ninepins.  It was played on grass or clay.  Later in the 1840's a Dutchman added one more pin and called it "tenpins"  In 1895 the American Bowling Congress was organized, and it formulated the rules for bowling as we know and today.
STRIKE-SPARE-GUTTER BALL-DEADWOOD  these are some of the words that you may hear your children saying.  Why???  Well, the Bellwood students have been learning bowling terms and techniques and the social value of the sport.  The students will be going bowling at Boulevard Lanes in Columbus for a life time activity on March 16th and 19th.  Grades K thru 3 will be going Tuesday, March 16 and grades 4-6 will go Friday, March 19.  We will be leaving from the school at 12:30 pm and return approximately at 3 pm.  Let's get a strike!!!!  Permission slips will be sent home on March 10th please return them on March 15th.
