Kindergarten

January has been a very busy month!  The most memorable part of the month was probably when we got to celebrate the first 100 Days of School!!  We celebrated this wonderful occasion on Tuesday, January 24, 2012.  The kindergartners celebrated everything the “100” way that day by making “100” necklaces and crowns, by eating crackers that looked like 100, by writing how they would spend $100 and by drawing a picture of how they think they may look when they are 100 years old. We also wrote about what we could and could not eat 100 of!
After 100 days of school, you will notice the Kindergarten students are able to do many things they could not 100 days ago.  Many are reading very well now as we are working hard in reading groups.  During this second half of Kindergarten, we will be learning to sound out words  and we have begun to learn the 60+ sight words that the students must be able to read by the end of the year. In math, most of the students can count and write their numbers to 100.  We will be working very hard this next month on telling time and measurement skills.  In science and social studies, we learned about how animals grow and change, community helpers and about Martin Luther King, Jr.  Next month, we will study presidents, our national capital and the weather and seasons.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the parents who helped with our Christmas parties.  It was wonderful fun for the kids and everyone’s help with games and food was greatly appreciated.  We will be celebrating our last class party for Valentine’s Day this month and we are sure it will also be a great success!
We find that we spend a lot of time during the day both dressing and undressing children.  It is so important that, as their parents, you take some time with your child each day and work with them on some of these “life skills”.  Teaching your child how to zip and unzip their coats and how to tie and untie their shoes will give us so much more time to work on meeting the goals and standards set for our class.  We would greatly appreciate any help you could give us in this area!
