First Grade News
By Shelli Eickmeier

We hope that everyone had a wonderful New Year!  All the children seemed eager to get back to the routine of school.  We have been busy with new challenges and the students have been working extremely hard.  We are anxiously approaching our 100th day of school.
The first bit of excitement (for the students and teacher) is the mild temperatures we are fortunate to have this year.  We discuss weather every morning and check the school’s website to find the temperature.  It really becomes a thrill (for them) when our temperature dips below zero.  Recording our negative temperatures makes the abstract concept of negative numbers a little easier to understand.
We continue to practice counting money, solving number stories, making number scrolls to practice three digit numbers, and using longs and cubes to learn about place value.  Thank you for continuing to help your student with their Home Link Practice.  This is a super way to keep you informed about the skills we are working on.  It is also great practice for the children and lets you know how your child is doing on a particular skill.
We have been moving right along in our Treasures Reading Program.  We have now studied all the short vowels and have been learning the vowel consonant vowel patterns.    We know the important job of the silent “e” and have also been introduced to the soft sounds of “g” and “c”.  The children have really been working hard and should be proud of their skills.  We continue to work on sounding, blending, and reading new words and in addition to this we are working at becoming more fluent readers.  This means that we no longer have to sound out every single word, and now have many committed to memory.  Keep them reading!!   Practice makes better.
We have been learning about our great state of Nebraska.  Ask your child about the state flower, bird, and tree.  We went on a virtual field trip of the State Capital, which was very exciting.  Ask your child about that impressive building.
Mark your calendars to attend Parent Teacher Conferences on Feburary 9.  I hope to see you then.  Stay warm and healthy!!
