Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible
Be Safe, Be Respectful and Be Responsible. You will hear these phrases echoing down the hallways, in the classroom and even on the playground. They are the building blocks for a new program unveiled at Bellwood Attendance Center's open house. These three simple, yet very effective phrases re enforce positive behavior. PBIS or Positive Behavior In School, is in its first year at the school. Staff members have seen this widely used program used effectively in other school settings.
Parents of the community were invited to participate in developing the program. Students are given "tickets" for positive behavior, i.e. opening the door for someone, cleaning up their area at the table after lunch, etc. The children are responding wonderfully to the changes.
When a child receives a "ticket" they hang a portion of it on the big board in the front lobby. The other half goes home to the parent. The parents are asked to sign the ticket, the student brings it back and it is entered into a drawing. Once a month, tickets are randomly drawn and prizes are given. Prizes come in all sizes from sitting with a favorite teacher for lunch, free ice cream cone to larger prizes at the end of the year.
As you can see by the picture, (click on the link below) the students have been doing a wonderful job being safe, respectful and responsible at school. Parents, if you would like ideas on implementing this program at home, please call the school for more information.
