Fourteen Year Streak Ended

The Scout Speech team won the 2009 Class C1 State Championship by outperforming the competition in finals.  Fourteen-year state champions Raymond Central settled for Runner-Up as the Scouts defeated the Mustangs by 28 points.  Raymond Central qualified 11 events for finals, while the Scouts only had 9.  However, the Scouts all had ranks of 1-3, and the Mustangs settled for 2nd-9th place in finals, helping the Scouts to victory.

Michaela H. won both poetry and persuasive by going straight ones in finals, becoming the most decorated speaker in school history.  She has won four state titles herself and qualified to represent Nebraska at the National Forensics League National Meet in Birmingham, Alabama, in June.  Weston S. own entertainment, the first in school history in that event, and Abbi B. won serious prose, the first in that event.  The Scouts now have 8 individual titles to their history:  Michaela (2 in poetry, 2 in persuasive), Weston (Ent.), Abbi (Ser.), Torie T. (Info.), and Doug K. (Humorous).  Ben M. was 2nd in poetry to his teammate, as was Andrew M. in entertainment.  Cody K. was 2nd in humorous prose, losing to the same person who defeated him in district finals.  Jesse and Ben teamed up for 2nd place in duet acting, and Jesse was also 3rd in serious prose.

Also qualifying for state were Christina O. and John O. in informative, Elizabeth H. in extemp, and the OID team of Andrew, Weston, Matt H., and Cody.  Making the district team but not qualifying for state were Matt H. in humorous, Staci O. in extemp, and Abbi B. in persuasive.

This is the 2nd State Championship for the speech team (2006), and the team was Runner-Up last year.  It is the 7th meet the team has won this year (Stanton, Crete, DC, Battle Creek, Conference, Districts, and State).
