5th Grade at Bellwood

Bellwood 5th Grade News

Miss Muller

I hope this article finds you all well and enjoying yourselves in all of this early cold weather we have been having!  The fifth graders have been very busy this month!  School is in full swing, and the students are making great progress.

In Science, we have finally completed our unit on Animal Classification.  The students worked together in groups to create posters about an animal group.  They turned out wonderfully!  They then were able to choose an animal from their group and research their specific animal.  They then created and presented a poster on their animal.  All the students did a great job completing their posters and making them their own!  Their assessment scores showed how hard they worked!  They were fantastic!

Our mealworm project is finally finished.  Many of the mealworms went through the complete metamorphosis, from egg to adult, right before our eyes.  Some students plan on taking their beetles’ home with them, while the rest of us plan on setting them free this Wednesday.  It was a great opportunity for us to use our skills of observation and inquiry.  Our new friends will be missed!

In Social Studies, we have moved on to Native Americans.  The students really enjoy viewing life from the view of a Native American.  Using new technologies, we are able to view photos, videos, and audio tracks together as a class and discuss them.  We have finished learning about all of the different groups, and moved on to creating our dioramas.  The students will present them at the beginning of next week.  There are many creative students in our room, and I am excited to see what they have come up with!

In Language Arts, the students have been working hard on a variety of projects.  They finished their book reports and have begun on their second one.  The first batch showed the creativity and love for reading that this group of students possess.  They were incredible!  They have also been working on many stories.  Next week, we begin our first mystery.  I think it is something that this group of students will really enjoy.

In 6th grade Social Studies, we are studying a topic that we can all relate to, immigration.  We are studying Angel and Ellis Island, and the immigrants who came to the United States.  It is a wonderful thing to study!  We have enjoyed a variety of activities, including posters, online activities, and discussions.

As our early winter continues, I hope you and your family stay warm and healthy!
