2010 Big Red Summer Academic Camps
The 2010 Big Red Academic Camps will be hosted by Nebraska 4-H and UNL faculty members in various academic areas across campus. These career exploration camps are a chance for you to explore the UNL campus, meet people from across the state, spend time investigating an interest or potential career and have lots of fun.

Important: Space is limited and camps will fill on a first-come, first-served basis. No refunds after May 1, 2010. Limited scholarships available. Most are grades 9-12. Biological Science is for grades 10-12.
Big Red Summer Academic Camps are residential camps; ALL housing and food will be provided for all participants throughout the duration of the camp.
Discover Golf
Learn, develop and improve your golf game. Sessions on etiquette, rules and the golf swing, along with play at local courses, all taught by a PGA professional! Camp concludes with a tournament and awards banquet. Campers need to bring their own equipment. NOTE: For more information and to register for this camp, check out www.USSportsCamps.com. Discover Film Making
Put your summer on the big screen! This movie-making adventure will allow you to actually make a film and spend time in the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center. You’ll have access to award-winning faculty and get to see how motion pictures really work. We’ll introduce you to one of the few digital film projects in the world. Participants are welcome to bring their own video cameras if available. Taught by the Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film.
Discover Biological Science
Get unique hands-on experience with scientific research. Work with UNL faculty and graduate students to design and carry out both field and laboratory-based research projects. Most projects will like focus on local invertebrate taxa (e.g. spiders). The goal of the week will be to complete an independent project, culminating in the presentation of a scientific talk. No prior experience is necessary, but campers must be willing to work with live crickets and spiders. Campers must also be willing to work outside and ‘get their hands dirty’. Taught by the School of Biological Sciences.
Discover Unicameral Youth Conference
Serve as a Nebraska Senator in a three day session in the Nebraska Unicameral conducted at the Nebraska Capitol Warner Chamber. Interact with Nebraska State Senators, legislative aides, policy experts, lobbyists and governmental agency representatives. The hands-on experience will give you a better understanding of the relationship between Nebraska government and American politics.
Discover Culinary Arts and Food Science
Learn new culinary arts skills and understand the science of food. Impress friends and family with your new culinary skills and techniques. Explore local foods, sensory evaluation, plate painting, knife skills, garnishing and chocolate. Taught by the Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences and the University of Nebraska – Lincoln Extension
Discover Veterinary Science
Explore various aspects of veterinary medicine and discover what veterinarians have to know to understand animal diseases and how they progress, are diagnosed, treated and prevented. Taught by the Professional Program in Veterinary Medicine and the Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences.
Discover Companion Animals
Do you have a pet or just want one? Did you know that owning a pet provides us with health benefits like lowered heart rate or stress? American treasure their companion animals and the products and services available have expanded greatly in the last decade. Explore the variety of opportunities to work with companion animals. Learn about the care and behavior of companion animals from dogs and cats to lizards and parrots. This session will provide those interested in working with companion animals as a veterinarian, dog trainer or developing pet food to discover the variety of careers available for those who love pets. Taught by the Department of Animal Science.
Discover 3D Animation and Virtual World Creation
Create animations for storytelling, create and play interactive games, or create a video to share with friends on the Web. Using Alice, you will populate your own virtual world with 3D objects, people, animals and vehicles to make your own animated program. Learn the fundamentals and concepts that drive the technologies of today including Google™, Facebook ©, MySpace ™, Blackberry ® cell phones, and iPods ®! A background in general computer use is required. Taught by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering.
Discover Fashion Design
Let your talents shine through and enhance your design skills with the help of experts. You’ll explore pattern designs and learn to select and work with natural fibers such as cotton, silk and /or wool. You’ll benefit from personal attention and leave the event with a clothing project garment well under way! (Participants in this camp must have at least 3 years of sewing experience, or have completed Clothing Level II or above within the Nebraska Projects, and be skilled in garment construction (sewing). Minimal skills required including darts, application of zippers, set-in sleeves, and familiarity with both knits and woven fabrics. Discover Natural Resources
Explore Nebraska’s soil, streams, prairies, rocks, lakes, forest, and wetlands while you learn more about fish, wildlife, geospatial information systems, drought, groundwater resources and the environment. Experience first hand how the systems in the natural world work together and how changes to these systems have far-reaching consequences. Campers should be excited to spend quality time outdoors and should come prepared for the elements. Taught by the School of Natural Resources.
