Bellwood 5th Grade News
Miss Muller
As always, the Bellwood fifth graders have been very busy! We are now going full force into our second semester, and with the new semester come many new projects!
In Social Studies we are studying Colonial America. The students are enjoying this unit very much! Next week, the students will be making horn books individually that will be filled with information they have learned about the colonies. We will also be creating settlements and plantations to put on display. The assessment for this unit will probably be late next week, provided we don’t have any more snow days! Keep an eye on the weekly newsletters for an update on this.
In science, we are studying force and motion. This is a concept that most students really enjoy, because it affects them each and every day. We have completed a variety of experiments to illustrate Newton’s three laws. We have created balloon rockets, had race car races, held special running contests, and much more. We will move on to simple machines next week. I encourage you to point out simple machines you use every day to your child. It will help them understand that we use simple machines all the time!
The students have finished writing their object stories, and most are still working on illustrating them. They are very excited to have a book published! They are a very creative bunch, and their stories have turned out wonderfully!
In 6th grade social studies, we are wrapping up the Great Depression. The students enjoyed learning about the depression and the effects of it. We will be taking the assessment at the end of this week and moving on to WWII next week. We will be working on WWII for nearly a month.
Our first batch of I-movies are finished. If you want to view them, feel free to stop in! There are other students that are excited to begin our next group of movies. They will be of the Christmas program and creating our parent gifts. Also, some of the students will begin creating our classroom website. I will have more information for you about that once we get started!
I want to remind parents that I send home a newsletter every Monday. If you still have questions that are not answered in the newsletter, feel free to e-mail or call me at school. With all of the crazy weather and storms we have had, I hope that you and your families are warm and safe!
