David City Public Schools would like to welcome Mrs. Isabel Schmid to Scout Nation as the 3rd grade teacher at David City Elementary. Isabel Schmid is originally from Osceola. That is where she learned the importance of a small town community. She went to college at Wayne State College where she graduated with an Elementary and Special Education degree. Isabel has spent the last 3 years teaching 4th grade in Schuyler. Isabel’s husband, Tyler Schmid, is a David City alumni. Together, they have two young boys, Liam and Koa. Isabel wanted to be more involved in the community in which she resides, therefore, decided she wanted to teach at David City. Isabel looks forward to getting to know the people that make this town so great. She’s excited to build relationships with her students, their families, and the staff at DCPS. Go Scouts! David City Public Schools would like to welcome Mrs. Jamie Badstieber to Scout Nation as the Title I teacher at Bellwood Elementary! Jamie lives in Columbus but was raised in Sidney Nebraska. She obtained her Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Wayne State College. This will be her 18th year in the classroom. She is married with three children. One of Jamie's favorite things to do is travel. One of her favorite destinations was Spain. Jamie chose Bellwood elementary because she loved the family feel of the school. She attended a small country school as a child and loved how Bellwood reminded her of her elementary school. She is really looking forward to meeting all the families of Bellwood Elementary and getting to know her students. Welcome, Mrs. Badstieber!

David City Public Schools would like to welcome Mrs. Shelli Oborny to Scout Nation as the elementary special ed teacher at David City Elementary. Shelli Oborny is originally from Neligh, NE. She attended Dana College where she played volleyball for 4 years. She is beginning her 30th year as a special education teacher. Her husband Chuck (an Aquinas alum), is a Battalion Chief for the Omaha Fire Dept. Their daughter is a preschool teacher in West Point and their son just graduated from UNL in May. She has gone skydiving and rode in a hot air balloon! Her ‘in-laws’ live in Bellwood so she is familiar with this area and looks forward to teaching in a district where she will eventually know most everyone. She is excited to get to know staff and the community because it takes a village to raise a child. Welcome, Mrs. Oborny!

David City Public Schools would like to welcome Miss Lindsey Sawyers to Scout Nation as the third grade teacher at David City Elementary. Hello Scout Nation, meet Miss Lindsey Sawyers. Miss Sawyers will be teaching 3rd grade at David City Elementary School for the 2023-2024 school year. Miss Sawyers graduated from Central City High School in 2019. She continued her education at the University of Nebraska-Kearney with a degree in Elementary Education and recently graduated this past May. This is Miss Sawyers’ first year teaching and she is very excited to start her teaching career with David City Public Schools. Miss Sawyers chose DCPS because it is close to home and she was drawn to the small school atmosphere. Miss Sawyers and her fiancé, Jackson recently moved to David City to start their life together. When she is not teaching, you can find Miss Sawyers spending time with her family and friends, taking her dog on evening walks, and doing lots of planning and preparing for her upcoming wedding in October of 2024. Welcome, Miss Sawyers!

David City Junior High Football Mini-Camp. This camp is for players entering grades 6-8. The camp is Monday, July 31 - Thursday, August 3, 8:00 am – 10:00 am & Friday, August 4, 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm. Practice will be held at the High School practice field east of the elementary

David City Youth Football Camp. This camp is for players entering grades 1-5. It will begin on Monday night, July 31 and run through Thursday night, August 3, from 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm. Each practice will be held at the high school practice field east of the elementary.

FFA Chapter Member Coleigh Kluck showed off her horse skills at the Colfax County Fair. "I’ve learned a lot on horses, especially balance and hard work. In order to be able to get on a horse and do good on it and actually ride by yourself, you have to have balance no matter what you do. You can’t always rely on the saddle horn. That's why I've learned to ride bareback running and everything else. The other end of it is hard work. You can’t just go out there and expect to win everything with little to no practice and experience. I go out there and ride everyday so that I can to keep up winning the things I already do. The things I like about showing horses is the competition and just getting your horses used to the people so they know what to expect the next year on. My favorite events are poles and western horsemanship. Western horsemanship shows your horse it doesn’t always have to run right after it gets in the arena, and that it can settle down and go slower. Poles teaches your horse to go around obstacles fairly fast and not get scared of them while doing it." Congratulations to Coleigh on all of her success at the Colfax County Fair! Natalie Summers, recently graduated FFA Chapter member, is spending this week preparing for the Buffalo County Fair. "I’ve been showing beef in Buffalo County for about nine years, and I wouldn’t trade my experience for anything in the world. Even through the lows, there is no greater high than knowing you have worked hard for what you have earned. For me, it’s the smell of cedar in the show ring and the heat of the sun when you lead the calves out to water that makes me feel nostalgic as I approach my last year. I cannot express enough gratitude toward my family for not only allowing me to show all these years, but for teaching me about what goes into raising an animal. I have learned so much through 4-H and I will always be an advocate for agricultural education and agricultural programs." Best of luck, Natalie, and may your week be full of lots of cedar chips, sunshine, and hard-earned ribbons!

FFA Chapter Member Madie Summers is going to be spending this week in the barns at the Buffalo County Fair, getting her calves ready for show. "I really enjoy showing red Angus steers at the Buffalo County Fair, because I get to spend time with my family throughout the whole process and I learn so much about the animals. I have learned that calves are very sensitive, and they all have different personalities. They all think differently when you’re trying to halter and train them for fair. Even though they seem very gentle, they can still hurt you if you’re not careful. As a Clover Kid for three years, I showed bucket calves, but over the past four years as a 4-H member, I have learned so much more about these animals including how to wash, clip, and keep the animals healthy." Youth boys basketball parents: Due to the heat forecasted for Tuesday, Coach Schulze has decided to cancel the final session of basketball at the Park. Thank you to all you attended the previous 2 weeks! We'll plan on doing this again next summer!

David City Scout Youth Volleyball Registration

Just a friendly reminder that all students planning to participate in fall sports will need to complete and turn in to the office an athletic physical, NSAA consent form, and complete the concussion test prior to practicing. All 7th, 9th, and 11th graders and any new student that plan to participate will have to do a concussion test. Concussion testing will be Aug. 2 from 3-5 pm at the high school. Please enter the doors on the southwest corner of the school. The concussion test takes approximately 30 minutes. Fall sports parent meeting will be Aug. 7th at 6:30 p.m. in the high school gym.

HS football mini camp will be in the morning 6:30am - 9:00am July 24-28. The football team will lift M/W/F 9:30am - 10:15am.

FCCLA Officer Program of Work Preparation will be on August 1st, 2nd, and 3rd from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. Please enter the school by the front entrance.

Emma Z: Grand Champion purple in Pony Pleasure Purple in egg race, flag race, keyhole, 2 yr old gelding halter Blues in showmanship, 4 year old and older halter mares, barrels, pole bending, western horsemanship Jacob L: Reserve in Rabbits and with his dog Scout, overall champion in poultry, and blues with his goats Mason P: 3 purples for his cows and a blue for showmanship Natalie S: Butler County Round Robin Showmanship Championship. Autumn Lindsley, Elyssa Bales, and Jacob Lange showcased their exceptional talent and dedication during the conference by participating in various events. Their remarkable achievements are a testament to their hard work, determination, and advisers' guidance. The results of their participation are as follows: Level 3 Interior Design, Silver Medalist- Autumn Lindsley, Level 1 Promote and Publicize FCCLA, Silver Medalist- Elyssa Bales, and Level 1 Career Investigation, Silver Medalist- Jacob Lange. The conference provided David City FCCLA members with a wealth of incredible opportunities, including attending inspiring speaker sessions, engaging in youth workshops, competing on a national level, and networking with fellow youth leaders. Centered around the "incREDible" theme, this conference highlighted how FCCLA offers incredible prospects to its members and advisers through Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) education. By exploring career opportunities and instilling real-world skills, advocacy, and service, FCCLA empowers its members to make an incREDible impact that will guide them throughout their lives.

Grace Krafka is another of our horse showmen who had a great county fair! Grace not only shows at the county fair, but other shows across the state, as well. "My name is Grace Krafka. I have been riding horses since I was 2 years old. I own 3 horses and compete in junior high rodeos, 4-H, National Barrel Horse Association, and this year qualified and competed in Perry Georgia at the National Junior High Finals Rodeo. Barrel Racing and Pole Bending are my two favorite events. Through my years of working with horses I have learned that determination, patience and a whole lot of hard work pay off in the long run and is what it takes to reach your goals. I love showing horses because I am working with my favorite animal to be the best we both can be." Grace Krafka

FFA Chapter member Mason Prothman has been working with his cattle for months in preparation for the beef show on Saturday morning. Mason is our lone FFA cattle showman at the Butler County Fair. "I will be showing 1 feeder calf, 1 registered breeding heifer, and 1 market steer. Throughout this process I have learned that cattle all have different temperaments and it can change everyday! There are so many fine details that you have to focus on with show cattle! Such as hair growth, muscle building, and correct feed rations. There are so many more things that you have to focus on when building cattle! I enjoy showing my livestock because when I am in the ring it shows people what I’ve been working with and how much time I’ve put into it. My favorite thing to do with the animals overall is break them, because the amount of bonding time you get with them and how much you can see them change throughout the first week or 2 is incredible! It is not always the easiest breaking calves, but it is all worth it at the end of the cow's show career!" Mason Prothman

Today's featured FFA Chapter Member is Jacob Lange. Jacob gets the award for the most species shown at the county fair. He has some very busy days ahead! "I am showing goats, my dog Scout, and rabbits on Thursday. Friday I show my poultry. I enjoy showing my livestock because I get to learn more about the breed of them, how much feed they need to grow, and the responsibility of taking care of them. I have learned that every animal has its own personality and needs different requirements to grow the way we want them too. And we have to adapt to the way they want to learn." Jacob Lange
